Logistical Challenges
Medication management in a high-complexity hospital such as El Mar presents structural challenges that no manual or semi-automated system can fully resolve. The sustained growth in the number of active treatments and the diversity of drug formulations places constant pressure on storage space, preparation speed, and dispensing accuracy.
Added to this is the regulatory requitement to ensure full traceability of every dispensed unit, with real-time monitoring of lots and expiration dates, as well as the need to maintain a rigorous cold chain for a growing number of biologic and heat-sensitive medications. Previuous systems, based on separate vertical and horizontal carousels for unit-dose dispensing and high-volume storage, did not allow for a unified view of inventory or true optimization of internal workflow, leading to operational inefficiencies and latent risks to patient safety.
At the same time, the hospital had to maintain patient care operations at all times during the technological transition, which required a solution that could be implemented in phases without interrupting sevice.
Solution
Lositek has deigned and implemented a hospital intralogistics solution that integrated all processes in the medication cycle into a single technological ecosystem. At the heart of the system are two AutoStore systems that operate simultaneously and independently: one at room temperature, with a capacity of 111 m³, 3,000 bins, and more than 50,000 storage locations, and another in a refrigerated chamber, with a capacity of 23 m³, 580 bins, and more than 10,000 storage locations.
Outpatient dispensing is automated using the LSP Pharmathek Sintesi system, which combines ambient-temperature and refrigerated modules with a capacity for more than 34,000 packages and a throughput of up to 350 units per hour. This system incorporates patented Euclid 3D technology, which enables the simultaneous picking of up to 15 packages in a single motion, reducing the number of trips per order by up to five times and significantly optimizing the productivity of pharmacy staff.
The comprehensive integration of all equipment and warehouses is carried out through the Galys WMS, Smartlog Group’s proprietary warehouse management software. Galys provides a unified, real-time view of all logistics flows, centrally manages inventory, plans replenishment in advance, and coordinates the internal traffic of robots, ports, and workstations. Its implementation at Hospital del Mar makes this facility the first hospital to complete a comprehensive logistics process with certified end -to-end treceability.
