Smartlog has implemented the new Autostore robot system at the new Berdin logistics centre in Belartza in order to speed up order preparation and improve the traceability of its item references.

In November 2021 Berdin opened its new corporate headquarters in the Belartza district of San Sebastián. Barely five months later the distributor’s new logistics centre was started up, with over 2,000 m2 of floor space featuring the AutoStore system, implemented by Smartlog.

Autostore is a robot-based automated technology for order preparation that allows items to be stored in bins stacked on top of one another, managing picking tasks in a fast, optimal way. It is designed to handle large volumes of items with fast and slow movement in small orders and small boxes, for operations requiring high-density storage.

Autostore smart robots process orders, locate the bins containing the items required and transport them to people’s work stations for final preparation.

Whenever a bin is brought to the work station, the robot returns it to the system in the same place as it was, but always on the top, enabling the system to learn automatically and sort items by rotation: those with the highest rotation will always be in the bins at the top levels and those with lower demand will be in the bins lower down. Should an order require a low-rotation product, the robots work together to move the bins higher up out of the way.

Thanks to this technology, all storage processes in the distributor’s new logistics centre are fully automated.

It is an energy-efficient system that allows orders to be speeded up, as Berdin explains, because the system ‘learns’ which items have the highest rotation and stores them in a higher layer. It also improves traceability of items, as it allows personalised monitoring of each one, enabling us to meet new demands in the sector, taking very much into account the importance of digitalisation.
